Plan

Inspired by Rem Koolhaas'  plan of the house at bordeaux, I wish to encompass both the qualities of geometrical shapes, and the space between them in my building.

First a drew a modified version of the plan into google sketchup.

Then I rotated it and pulled shapes out of both the plan and the newly created section.

This way I could create many interesting relationships betweens spaces and voids.

The next step is to change the shape to fit the context of UNSW and to fit the design brief. Then extend the bridging qualities at the top.

Summery of Concepts

Using the 3 articles, 3 concepts were narrowed down for this engineering building.

1. Form echoes function
2. Interaction of people and place
3. Structure aids form

Three News Articles

If form follows function, then you should be able to look at a building and have a good idea about what goes on inside. If you can make sense of a place, It should make life in the city more pleasurable and comfortable, and help people figure out where they are. One should be able with a little attention, to read through that building to the reason for that building. It is a humanistic inquiry that recognizes that buildings and settings, alone, do not make place. People, in their interaction with the natural and built environment, make place. Architects and planners can look at this physical chaos of buildings in transition and give the chaos some conceptual and formal clarity that addresses current needs, opportunities, and aspirations. Provide visitors with enhanced understanding of the site, through exposure of fabric and interpretation. This required innovative engineering to ensure that the structural supports would not overwhelm the structure, or obscure the form and materiality of the existing building.

A change in perspective influenced by the viewer.

Using a shape which can be viewed from many different perspectives, a sustainable environment is created. There are no cars on the road, and only electric trams and bicycles. Removing this from Anzac parade means there is more room for open space, meaning more trees and green grass.

Using a projected texture for the walls, the texture is stretched or compressed depending on where it is viewed from.

The light texture on the benches has been created so that it forms different shapes in each direction, meaning that each viewer can gather a different perspective on it

The ground texture is designed, so that it looks grey from afar, where-by if the viewer were close, they can admire the detail
